Charcoal and Indian Ink
Charcoal and Indian ink in my opinion can give very similar results, but are totally different to work with. Charcoal is easy to manipulate and can create smooth transitions from the lightest to the darkest of shades. Indian ink on the other hand can create dramatic changes between light and dark, but it can be very hard to correct a slight error. Indian ink can create sharp edges, but it can be hard to get shading transitions right. I personally really love charcoal, and I was inspired by a charcoal drawing my grandfather did.
